A WORD FROM OUR

President

Making dreams come true has always been one of my greatest aspirations. Over the past few years, many of those dreams have become a reality, bringing me tremendous joy and emotion.

And speaking of dreams, our role model, Anderson Varejão, is also very happy to see his own dream becoming a reality: giving back to society some of what basketball has given him — with so much more still to accomplish.

Today, the Institute operates projects in dozens of cities across all four states of Brazil’s Southeast Region, positively impacting the lives of more than 4,000 children, adolescents and their families.

Our mission is to promote social inclusion and integration — a responsibility to which we remain deeply committed and continue to strengthen our expertise every day. This year, we had the opportunity to welcome many children and adolescents with disabilities, who brought with them tremendous affection, life lessons and inspiring examples of dedication, resilience and perseverance.

These experiences showed us how much we still had to learn and inspired us to study, improve and continue moving forward together.

Beyond the basketball court, our students also excel in the missions developed by our Multidisciplinary Team, scoring incredible “three-pointers” in the game of life through artistic activities including theater, dance, singing, painting, poetry and filmmaking.

They also stand out through community initiatives, collecting food and clothing for nonprofit organizations and families in vulnerable situations, as well as through sustainability efforts such as reforestation, revitalization of public spaces and community cleanups.

Always guided by the goal of developing young changemakers, we encourage our students to take initiative and help organize these activities, putting our motto into practice:

“It’s Much More Than Basketball!”

Through this project, Instituto Anderson Varejão uses basketball as an educational tool, focusing not only on athletic development, but above all on the growth and development of children and adolescents.

The Ídolo Social Project provides introductory basketball classes while promoting inclusion, social integration and values-based development for children and adolescents ages 7 to 16. The project operates across four program sites in Vinhedo, as well as additional sites in Campinas and Valinhos.

The project also incorporates Cross-Cutting Themes that connect sports with educational and social issues. These activities are designed to help students develop the knowledge and skills needed for their overall development, while promoting human rights, gender equality, a culture of peace and non-violence, global citizenship, cultural diversity and the contribution of culture to sustainable development.

Instituto

Anderson Varejão

Founded in 2014, Instituto Anderson Varejão is a Brazilian nonprofit organization that develops sports and educational programs primarily for children and adolescents ages 7 to 14 who are enrolled in public or private schools.

IAV’s initiatives are designed to encourage participation in sports, support motor development and improve quality of life. Their impact extends beyond the basketball court through activities that engage families and promote inclusion, relationships, community interaction and social development through shared experiences.

Through the work of Instituto Anderson Varejão, we continue to create meaningful opportunities for the development of children and adolescents. We seek to expand these opportunities by establishing new partnerships and strengthening existing ones, supported by our ongoing commitment to high standards of management and governance. This enables us to advance education, sports and social responsibility in the communities we serve.

INSTITUTIONAL PARTNERSHIP

Instituto Anderson Varejão and Jr. NBA work together through the official youth basketball program of the world’s leading basketball league.

The program helps grow the game of basketball while creating a meaningful impact on young people both on and off the court.

PROFESSIONAL

DEVELOPMENT

2025

With the goal of providing ongoing professional development and ensuring excellence in the work carried out by our sports education professionals, IAV teachers and coordinators from the state of São Paulo attended a training clinic in the city of São Paulo, held in partnership with Pró Basquete.

Participants took part in both practical and classroom sessions designed to enhance their basketball teaching methods. The activities were led by two international coaches: Spain’s Octavio Lafiaccola, who also serves as IAV’s Regional Coordinator in Vinhedo, and Argentina’s Juan Pablo Figueroa, along with guest speakers.

The program provided an intensive exchange of experiences and opportunities for professional growth through a multidisciplinary approach. Topics ranged from motor development strategies to team management.

The coordinators and teachers who attended now serve as multipliers, sharing the knowledge acquired during the clinic with the educational teams at IAV program sites. This strengthens the quality of the sports-based social development work carried out every day.

The impact goes beyond the professional development of our teachers, directly benefiting the young people we serve and reinforcing Instituto Anderson Varejão’s commitment to excellence in educator development.

The clinic was held at the Baby Barioni Sports Complex in São Paulo and welcomed distinguished guests including Helen Luz, a member of Brazil’s 1994 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup championship team, and Colonel Helena Reis, São Paulo State Secretary of Sports, who addressed the participating teachers.

The three-day clinic included more than 20 hours of activities led by the coaches. They demonstrated a variety of games, drills and activities that can be incorporated into classes according to the age and skill level of each group.

The hands-on exercises also gave teachers an opportunity to experience the activities from their students’ perspective, helping them better understand the dynamics and challenges students encounter during class.

OFFICIAL

LAUNCH

In August 2025, Instituto Anderson Varejão (IAV) reached another important milestone with the arrival of the Ídolo Social Project in Vinhedo. The initiative is supported by Avery Dennison, a global company with a 50-year presence in the city that embraced IAV’s mission of transforming lives through basketball.

To officially mark the beginning of activities, a launch event was held at the basketball court of Escola Estadual Professora Maria do Carmo Ricci Von Zuben, in the Capela neighborhood, which is also one of the project’s program sites. Students from both Vinhedo program sites participated in the event.

The opening ceremony was attended by IAV President Jamil Costa, Executive Director João Marcelo Leite and General Coordinator Thiago Palma, as well as the teachers and interns working at the program sites.

Avery Dennison was represented by members of its leadership team, including Isabela Galli, Vice President and General Manager, Label and Graphic Materials; Janet Sandoval, Director of Corporate Social Responsibility at the Avery Dennison Foundation; Camila Benedetti, Director of Research, Development and Sustainability; Cecilia Mazza, Sustainability Manager; Carina Silva, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion lead; Sandra Alvarez, Marketing and Strategy Manager; and Juan Cemoz, Communications Coordinator.

“It is inspiring to contribute to the development of the community and support children not only through sports, but also through education and emotional well-being.”

ISABELA GALLI — VICE PRESIDENT AND GENERAL MANAGER, LABEL AND GRAPHIC MATERIALS, AVERY DENNISON

“Basketball is a way to connect with children, but what truly motivates us is seeing that, beyond sports, they are learning about sustainability, mental health and citizenship.”

CROSS-CUTTING THEMES

Cross-Cutting Themes are a fundamental part of our work. Through them, we are committed to an educational approach rooted in citizenship, providing students with the tools to reflect on, analyze and critically evaluate individual and collective actions as they develop their role as citizens.

Our goal is to encourage students to express their opinions and develop thoughtful questions and responses to everyday situations, fostering both critical thinking and social development. The themes are therefore addressed through an interdisciplinary approach, using educational sports as the foundation for developing knowledge and critical awareness.

Each month, classes address topics aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and connected to challenges commonly faced by our students. Lectures and discussions related to each month’s theme are also held throughout the program.

For every issue or situation introduced by educators, students are encouraged to connect the theme to their basketball experience. This helps broaden their knowledge, particularly in the social and cognitive spheres, while expanding their understanding of the world around them. It also encourages them to apply the values and lessons learned through basketball to life beyond the court.

#MuchMoreThan Basketball!

Mission

playing together

With the goal of strengthening interpersonal skills, solidarity and social responsibility, students from the Ídolo Social Project participated in the “Playing Together” campaign, an initiative that brought sports and citizenship together through the collection and donation of food, personal hygiene products, clothing, warm clothes and blankets.

The initiative went beyond encouraging sports participation by emphasizing the importance of teamwork and community engagement — essential values in the overall development of young people.

Students took an active role throughout every stage of the initiative. First, they mobilized their personal networks, seeking donations from family members, friends and neighbors. They then helped organize and sort the donated items, including clothing, shoes and food.

All collected items were donated to local organizations that directly support vulnerable populations, further strengthening the connection between the project and the communities it serves.

Friendly match

Tribos do Corpo

Students from Vinhedo traveled to the neighboring city of Campinas to participate in a basketball festival alongside participants from Academia Tribos do Corpo.

The event provided IAV students with an important opportunity to interact and exchange experiences with other young people, while also giving them a chance to put into practice the skills and concepts developed during their regular basketball classes.

For teachers, the event also served as an opportunity to assess participants’ physical, technical and emotional development.

Visiting

Avery dennison

A group of Ídolo Social Project students from Vinhedo organized a special activity for Avery Dennison employees. They brought a basketball hoop and basketballs to the company’s facility, inviting employees to test their shooting skills in a basketball challenge.

In addition to giving participants the chance to win prizes, the activity created an opportunity for interaction and celebration with people who are part of IAV’s network of impact.

Following the outdoor activities with employees, the students took part in a guided tour of the facility. The visit gave them an opportunity to learn more about Avery Dennison’s production processes and operations as a global leader in materials science and digital identification solutions

IBIRAPUERA ARENA

NBB ALL-STAR GAME

Students from the Vinhedo program site joined a group of more than 300 children from Instituto Anderson Varejão and Instituto ASPA programs across the state of São Paulo for the 2026 NBB Caixa All-Star Game at Ibirapuera Arena.

The event provided the young participants with a memorable experience and an opportunity to see Brazilian basketball at its highest level. They watched some of the country’s leading players up close while enjoying a night of entertainment that included light shows, an LED basketball court and a live performance by Brazilian singer Seu Jorge.

The NBB Caixa All-Star Game is one of Brazil’s premier basketball events, bringing together many of the country’s leading players. In 2026, the event returned to Ibirapuera Arena, one of São Paulo’s most iconic sports venues, welcoming a large crowd of basketball fans.

PROFESSIONAL

DEVELOPMENT

2026

With the goal of providing ongoing professional development and ensuring excellence in the work carried out by our sports education professionals, teachers from the Ídolo Social Project attended the Super Clínica Pró Basquete in São Paulo. The event was organized by Instituto Anderson Varejão in institutional partnership with Pró Basquete.

The Super Clínica combined practical and classroom sessions covering topics such as motor skills, body control and basketball fundamentals, as well as basic offensive and defensive concepts. Activities were led by coaches with international experience and extensive backgrounds in youth player development.

The program was led by Argentine coach Ricardo Bojanich, Pró Basquete’s General Technical Coordinator. He was joined by fellow Argentine Juan Pablo Figueroa, Spanish coach Octavio Lafiaccola, and Brazilian coaches Flavio Davis and Daniel Wattfy, all of whom have extensive experience in youth basketball development.

The content focused on introductory basketball and school-based basketball, with an emphasis on the professional development of teachers, Physical Education students and professionals working in social programs. In addition to IAV teachers, participants included professionals from Instituto ASPA and teachers from the public school system.

The clinic was held at the Baby Barioni Sports Complex in São Paulo and welcomed distinguished guests including Helen Luz, a member of Brazil’s 1994 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup championship team.

Representing the São Paulo State Department of Sports were Executive Secretary Colonel Marcelo Lessa and Sports Leader Priscila Souza, who participated in a panel discussion on institutional partnerships.

The three-day clinic welcomed 150 registered professionals and included more than 20 hours of activities. Coaches demonstrated a variety of games, drills and activities that can be incorporated into classes according to the age and skill level of each group. The hands-on exercises also gave teachers the opportunity to experience the activities from their students’ perspective and better understand the dynamics and challenges they face.

Pró Basquete LEAGUE

Project students also participated in the LPB Instituto Cury SP (Liga Pró Basquete), a mixed-gender U15 competition in which boys and girls compete on the same teams. Throughout the competition, 18 teams from cities across the state participated in regional rounds.

During the first stage, teams from Vinhedo and Campinas represented Region III, competing against other local teams and earning qualification for the final stage.

The finals were held at Clube Continental in São Paulo and brought together the six qualifying teams: Franca and Ribeirão Preto (Region I), Barueri and Santana de Parnaíba (Region II), and Vinhedo and Campinas (Region III), along with two guest teams from the host club.

In the Gold Division, Vinhedo finished second, while Campinas placed third.

Participating in the league gave students a broader experience of competitive basketball while reinforcing values such as teamwork, respect and positive social interaction, as well as promoting connections among young people from different cities.

Valinhos

BASKETBALL FESTIVAL

To promote interaction among students from different groups and provide an opportunity to put into practice the skills developed during regular classes, the Valinhos program site hosted a Basketball Festival that brought together children from the Campinas and Vinhedo program sites.

Students participated in recreational activities and skills challenges, including circuits, competitions and small-sided 3-on-3, 4-on-4 and 5-on-5 games.

The event provided opportunities for fun, interaction and learning through activities designed to respect each participant’s individual abilities and stage of development, creating an inclusive, healthy and educational environment.

LBF ALL-STAR GAME

BASKETBALL CLINIC

As part of the 2026 Women’s Basketball League (LBF) All-Star Game program, a Basketball Clinic brought together more than 100 girls from social programs in the Campinas region, including Instituto Anderson Varejão and Instituto ASPA.

The event was held at Tênis Clube de Campinas and featured former Brazilian National Team player Helen Luz and Octavio Lafiaccola, respectively a coach and technical coordinator with Pró Basquete, an IAV partner organization.

Participants took part in activities focused on motor development and essential basketball fundamentals such as dribbling and passing, as well as finishing exercises including layups and shooting.

In addition to the on-court activities, the girls participated in a conversation with coaches from teams competing in the LBF, Brazil’s premier women’s basketball league.

Festivais de

Basquete

Jogar no Ataque
